The Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa – Subclass 482 allows Australian employers to sponsor skilled overseas workers to fill positions they cannot source locally. This visa is designed to address labor shortages and offers a pathway to temporary work and, in some cases, permanent residency.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the Subclass 482 visa, you must meet the following requirements:

For Applicants

  • Be nominated by an approved sponsor for a skilled position.
  • Have an occupation listed on the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), or Regional Occupation List (ROL).
  • Possess at least 2 years of relevant work experience.
  • Meet English language requirements (IELTS 5.0 or equivalent).
  • Pass health and character checks.

For Employers

  • Be an approved Standard Business Sponsor.
  • Conduct Labour Market Testing (LMT) to prove no suitable Australian worker is available.
  • Pay the Skilling Australians Fund (SAF) levy based on business turnover.

Visa Streams

There are three main streams under the Subclass 482 visa:

Short-Term Stream

  • Valid for up to 2 years (or 4 years if an international trade obligation applies).
  • Occupation must be on the STSOL.
  • No direct pathway to PR.

Medium-Term Stream

  • Valid for up to 4 years
  • Occupation must be on the MLTSSL or ROL.
  • Eligible for PR via Subclass 186 after 3 years.

Labour Agreement Stream

  • For employers with a formal labour agreement with the Australian Government.
