Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590) – Support Your Child While They Study in Australia
The Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590) allows a parent, legal guardian, or close relative to stay in Australia to provide care and support for an international student under 18 years of age—or older in exceptional circumstances. This visa ensures that young students have trusted supervision while studying in Australia.
It is a temporary visa and does not permit work. The visa holder must live with the student and provide accommodation, welfare, and emotional support throughout the student’s education journey.

Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the Subclass 590 visa, you must meet the following requirements:
Relationship with the Student
- Be the parent, legal guardian, or nominated relative of the student.
- Relatives may include: spouse, child, sibling, grandparent, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew
Age Requirement
- You must be at least 21 years old
Financial Capacity
- Show evidence of funds to support yourself and the student.
- Minimum requirement: AUD $29,710
Health & Character Requirements
- Complete medical checks and provide police clearance certificates
Health Insurance
- Maintain adequate health insurance for yourself and any accompanying family members
Family Members
- Children under 6 years old cannot be included unless there are compelling reasons
